Chatteris sits low in the fens and its chimney stacks take the full force of the easterly winds that sweep across the surrounding peat fields — conditions that turn a minor defect into a full rebuild problem within a few winters.
The town has a good proportion of Victorian and Edwardian terraced housing along Park Street, East Park Street and the roads running off the market area, built in the same era as nearby March and Ely when these fen towns were expanding. Stacks on these properties are typically tall relative to the roof pitch, giving them significant exposure. Spalling red brick, collapsed mortar at the cap course and lead flashings long since unsealed are the most common conditions we see on our initial surveys here.
A rebuild rather than repeated repointing is the cost-effective answer once joints have opened past the point where mortar will bond properly. We rebuild from just above the roofline, using matching red stock brick and installing a new DPC, stepped lead flashings and a proper weathered cap.
